Key Responsibilities:
Must be able to perform services with minimal guidance, on the following duties that may include, but are not limited to:
- Perform routine and STAT laboratory testing across various disciplines, including specimen processing, hematology, chemistry, coagulation, urinalysis, basic microbiology, and blood banking. Responsibilities also include patient/unit blood compatibility testing and issuing compatible blood and blood products when required.
- Complete Quality Management/Performance Improvement (QM/PI) documentation for all procedures, complications, and examination outcomes.
- Comply with established patient safety and infection control standards.
- Report all patient safety incidents, including injuries or breaches, in accordance with VA Safety Policy.
- Perform accurate testing, troubleshoot methodology issues, and input data as required.
- Conduct and document quality control (QC) processes, including reviewing QC data in real time, troubleshooting outliers, and adhering to laboratory policies.
- Ensure daily review of patient results for accuracy, method measuring range, and dilution protocols.
- Maintain equipment and perform calibrations, including QC reviews and determining calibration acceptability.
- Understand test-specific interferences, analytical measuring ranges, and dilution protocols to ensure quality results.
- Handle proficiency testing according to lab guidelines, ensuring proper documentation and adherence to protocols.
- Organize workload, prioritize tasks effectively, and complete assignments within established timeframes.
- Maintain reliable, competent performance with minimal supervision.
- Notify the COR of any incidents within 24 hours and submit a Patient Safety Report, following up as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned in a timely and efficient manner.
Qualifications:
- Must have completed at least two academic years of study above high school that included at least 24 semester hours in Chemistry and/or in appropriate fields of biological science
- American Medical Technologists (AMT) Standard or American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) certification as Medical Laboratory Technician is required.
- Minimum of one-year related experience.
- Basic knowledge of VISTALIS, VBECS, CPRS, and any other essential computer software according to established protocol.
- Willing to undergo all required training on time per VAMC policy.
- Must be aware of all laws, regulations, policies and procedures relating to Privacy, Confidentiality, and HIPAA and complies with all standards Zero breaches of privacy or confidentiality.
- Must be willing to undergo necessary immunizations.
