Physician (MD/DO) – Federal Bureau of Prisons 
Location: Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Atlanta – Atlanta, GA

Employment Type: Independent Contractor (1099)
Schedule: Full-Time Contract | Monday–Friday | 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM

Position Overview:
The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) is seeking a qualified Physician (MD/DO) to provide comprehensive medical care services for the inmate and detainee population at Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Atlanta. The Physician will provide diagnostic, therapeutic, preventive, and emergency healthcare services within the institution’s Health Services Department and Detention Center.

This is an opportunity to support a federal healthcare mission by delivering high-quality medical services in a secure correctional environment.

Schedule:
  • Monday–Friday, 7:30 AM–4:00 PM
  • Approximately 40 hours/week
  • 8-hour clinical sessions per day
  • Excludes federal holidays
  • Schedule may be adjusted based on institutional needs

Responsibilities:
  • Provide diagnostic, therapeutic, preventive, and emergency medical care
  • Conduct patient evaluations, physical exams, and medical histories
  • Order and interpret labs, imaging, and diagnostic tests
  • Diagnose conditions and develop treatment plans
  • Prescribe medications and manage patient care
  • Perform minor procedures (suturing, splinting, immobilization, minor surgery with local anesthesia)
  • Manage daily sick call and clinic operations
  • Respond to medical emergencies
  • Document medical encounters and progress notes
  • Recommend outside consultations when necessary
  • Collaborate with healthcare staff to improve patient care
  • Recognize and manage abnormal medical findings

Required Qualifications:
  • MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school
  • Active, unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state or territory
  • Minimum 3 years of physician experience
  • Current CPR/BLS certification (American Heart Association)
Provide verification of:
  • Medical credentials
  • License status
  • CME records
  • Competency documentation
  • Malpractice insurance
  • Medical school graduation

Security & Compliance Requirements:
  • Pass federal background clearance
  • Complete FCI Atlanta orientation and security training
  • Maintain compliance with:
  • Bureau of Prisons Health Services policies
  • Privacy Act of 1974
  • Institutional security procedures
  • Maintain confidentiality of inmate medical records
  • Report any professional license restrictions, suspensions, or disciplinary actions

Healthcare Environment:
  • Work in a correctional healthcare setting with inmate/detainee contact
  • Maintain professional boundaries and follow security protocols
  • Ensure equal access to medically necessary care for all patients

Additional Details:
  • Medical supplies and equipment provided by FCI Atlanta
  • Contractor responsible for maintaining required health clearances
  • Independent contractor role; not a federal employee position
  • Professional attire required (scrubs permitted; no khaki, green, or yellow scrubs)
